The Artige Company Real Time Manifesto

History   Back in 1997 there was a general lack of familiarity and knowledge for standards-based mechanisms when we first endeavored to create real-time process control devices based on the Internet technologies. We recognized that the existing protocols were not sufficient to handle real time data over Internet. So we kludged together a variety of methods, some of which were proprietary, on top of the Internet protocols to execute projects while working on a better solution. Now, after more than seven years, our goal is in sight to provide low cost real time data using Internet devices.

The Manifesto   The Artige Company is doing everything in its power to create the lowest cost, real-time, process control system using non-proprietary technologies and standards whenever feasible. If no standard is available, then the Artige Company will research and devise such technology, offering it up to the public as a new standard. When creating systems, the Artige Company will use open source technologies as can best be practically deployed. The technologies we will use are not done out of an "art for art's sake" scenario, rather out of the thought that the lifecycle costs will be minimized by selecting such technologies. In addition, relying upon open source technology will allow the Artige Company to leverage the work of others, allows for our work to be assessed and validated, and allows us to share our work in return.
